THE TREKKERS SYNDROME HIT NIGERIA

It is no longer news to hear some person  person or the other trekking from one location in Nigeria to Honour the president Elect. It all started as a statement made without thought in 2014 but which gained life after General Buhari won in 2015. With this victory came the outbreak of a disease new to Nigerians and its complexity even startles or foreign observers.  It started with one person who arrived Abuja and was hailed the as usual, the effect spread like wild fire. Just last week, a lady trekker honoured in Abuja by the National Orientation Agency(NOA), and was even giving a guard of honour parade to inspect. How pathetic is that. Another scene was a trekker whose aim was to “Honour our soldiers”, he was rewarded with #250,000 naira, a chieftaincy title and a Peugeot car.

Next, the flamboyant cyclers emerged. A group of Nigerians who probably have been unemployed for a while and decided to try their luck on stardom of which they were successful. I wonder what or who is next.

Think it is high time we stop glorifying ignoble acts in this country. If someone treks from owerri to Lagos to Honour something or someone, let him do it and let the press take no notice of it. If we turn a blind eye to all these our trekkers and cyclers, we will advertently discourage others from doing same.

God help the Federal Repulic Of Nigeria.
